What this pillar covers
Some patients arrive with no pain complaint at all. They are tired, bloated, foggy, or carrying an ADHD diagnosis and a gut that never settles, and every test they have had came back normal. This line looks for what those tests did not measure. Two services sit here, testing and gut-first care, and Dr. Justin Bergin, DC leads the plan that comes out of them.
Dr. Justin Bergin, DC performs every examination personally, 22 years into practice, at Lakeland and at Lady Lake for the Villages market.
Gut Health
Our gut work addresses the gut-brain axis, on the view that systemic inflammation often starts in the digestive tract. Food sensitivities, microbiome imbalance and nutritional deficiencies are identified first, then the plan works on the gut lining and bacterial balance through targeted nutrition and supplementation. Patients usually arrive for bloating, irregularity, fatigue or brain fog. Read about digestive symptoms and the gut-brain axis.
Functional Medicine Testing
Functional testing is the part that stops this being guesswork. Panels look at markers a standard annual physical does not order, and the result is read alongside your history rather than handed over as a printout. Nothing is prescribed before the results are in, and if the panels come back unremarkable we tell you that too. Read what the lab panels behind a functional workup cover.
How this line is paid for
Functional and holistic health is cash pay. Testing and the plan that follows are quoted before anything is ordered, so you know the cost of the panels and the cost of the follow-up separately rather than as one bundled figure.
Where this sits

Independent background: Mayo Clinic describes how diet, stress and gut bacteria interact in irritable bowel syndrome.
“I have had sich a great experience seeing Dr. Bergin. When other offices have told me I just had muscle damage or the only thing they could do for me was give shots, he said he had others ways to manage my pain and numbness, along with improving mobility. And he was right! I feel so much better!”
“I have had pain in my right upper back quadrant by my shoulder blade for at least a year now and the doctors have been unsuccessful in making the pain go away. I came to Dr. Bergin looking for some help. Within 3 to 4 weeks. My pain in that area is completely gone.”
“Dr. Bergin is phenomenal. Chronic lower back issues led a different doctor to mention back surgery to me. That was not an option I wanted to entertain. After a consult with Dr. B, he was confident that he could help resolve my back issues. I’ve been seeing him weekly to resolve the issue, and I am so pleased with the results so far! More mobility, less pain, and a great customer experience.”
“I bless the day that Dr. Bergin started working on me. I have had long standing pain for so long. After just a few visits my pain left and I feel so good. He is very patient oriented and caring. I regard him highly.”
“Dr. Bergin was instrumental in relieving my back pain which I had for many years. The techniques he used on relieving my back pain were impressive. I been going to chiropractors for years and Dr. Bergin is the best.”

What is the difference between a regular doctor and a functional medicine doctor?
A primary care physician diagnoses disease, treats it and manages it over time, which is exactly what you want when something is clearly wrong. A functional approach asks a narrower question: what is driving this, and what is measurable that nobody has measured. It is additive rather than a replacement, and it is at its most useful for the patient whose standard results keep coming back normal.
the clinic teamWill insurance pay for a functional medicine doctor?
Usually not, and this line is cash pay for that reason. Some laboratory panels may be billable through your own physician, and some are not covered by anyone. We quote the testing and the follow-up separately before anything is ordered, so you can decide what you actually want to spend on. Payment plans are available for self-pay care.
the clinic teamWhat is the downside of functional medicine?
Three real ones. The testing costs money and not every panel changes what anybody does. The evidence base is thinner than it is for mainstream diagnostics, and honest practitioners say so. And it attracts people who sell supplements as a business model. Our guard against the third is simple: nothing is recommended before results are in, and you can buy anything we suggest wherever you like.
the clinic teamCan a functional medicine doctor be your primary care doctor?
Not here. ChiroMed is led by a Doctor of Chiropractic, and this line does not replace primary care, does not manage your chronic disease medication and does not act as your medical home. Keep your physician. What this adds is a second, more granular look at the areas your annual physical was never designed to investigate.
the clinic teamAre holistic doctors the same as naturopathic doctors?
No, and the terms get used loosely enough to mislead people. Holistic is a description of an approach, and any licensed clinician can practise that way. Naturopathic doctor is a specific credential from a specific training route. ChiroMed is led by Dr. Justin Bergin, DC, a Doctor of Chiropractic. We are not naturopathic physicians and we do not present ourselves as any other kind of doctor.
the clinic teamAre naturopathic doctors legal in Florida?
Florida does not currently license naturopathic doctors the way a number of other states do, which is why the title carries a different meaning here than it might elsewhere. It is worth asking any practitioner what licence they actually hold. Ours is straightforward: Dr. Bergin is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic, and every plan in this line is written under that scope.
